The Instagram Story ratio is 9:16 — a tall, vertical rectangle that fills a phone screen edge to edge. In pixels that works out to 1080 × 1920. This free tool gives you a true 9:16 canvas so you can fit, crop and position any photo to the exact Instagram Story ratio, then export it ready to post. Scroll back up any time to keep editing; everything below explains the ratio and how to use the tool.
Vertical / portrait — the shape of a full phone screen.
Recommended resolution for crisp, uncompressed stories.
Keep key text clear of the top and bottom ~250 px of UI.
These three things are easy to mix up but mean different things. The aspect ratio (9:16) is the shape of the image — the relationship between width and height, no matter how big it is. The pixel dimensions (1080 × 1920) are the actual resolution; staying at 1080 × 1920 keeps your story sharp and avoids heavy compression. The file size is how many kilobytes or megabytes the saved image takes up, which depends on the format and quality you export at, not on the ratio. Get the 9:16 shape right first, keep the resolution at 1080 × 1920, and only then worry about file size.
If you post a square, landscape or 4:5 photo to a story, Instagram either adds borders around it or zooms in to fill the screen — and that zoom can crop out faces or text you wanted to keep. Instagram’s own cropping is unpredictable, so the safest approach is to decide the framing yourself. With this tool you can use Fill to crop a photo neatly into 9:16, or Fit to keep the whole image against a blurred or solid background. Either way you control exactly what stays in frame.
Even at the correct ratio, Instagram overlays its own interface on your story — the profile and progress bars at the top and the reply box at the bottom each take roughly 250 px. Anything important placed there can be hidden or hard to tap. The tool shows an optional safe-area guide so you can keep captions, logos and key details within the central region where they stay fully visible on every phone.
The standard aspect ratio for Instagram Stories is 9:16 (vertical/portrait). In pixels, the recommended resolution is 1080 × 1920 px. This exact ratio fills modern smartphone screens edge-to-edge without unsightly black bars, awkward letterboxing, or unexpected cropping.
If you post a photo with a different aspect ratio (such as a 1:1 square, 4:5 portrait, or 16:9 landscape photo), Instagram automatically adds gradient or solid borders to fill the empty screen real estate. Alternatively, if you pinch-to-zoom to make it fill the screen, Instagram cuts off significant portions of your composition. Using this tool, you can either neatly crop the image yourself with exact alignment or add an artistic blurred background using Fit mode.
Both Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels recommend a resolution of 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels tall. At 1080 × 1920 px, images retain maximum sharpness without triggering heavy algorithmic downsampling or pixelation by Instagram’s upload compression pipeline.
"Crop" mode zooms and frames your photo so it fills the full 1080 × 1920 px canvas, allowing you to drag and reposition the focus of your photo. "Fit" mode keeps 100% of your original image intact without losing any edges, placing it against a stylish blurred ambient background, solid black, solid white, or custom colored border.
Safe zones are the central regions of a 9:16 canvas where your text, logos, and critical visual elements won’t get obscured by Instagram’s interface. The top 250 px contains your profile picture, username, and story progress bars, while the bottom 250 px contains the reply box and reaction stickers. Keeping vital text within the middle 1420 px ensures full readability across all mobile devices.
No. The Instagram Story Ratio Tool operates 100% client-side inside your web browser using HTML5 Canvas and the HTML File API. Your images never leave your local device, and no data is transmitted to an external server or third-party cloud.
Yes. Simply upload your horizontal image. You can either crop the center or focal point into a vertical 9:16 composition using the pan controls, or select Fit mode with "Blur Photo" background to showcase your full wide landscape photo with cinematic aesthetic borders.
Use PNG if your story contains sharp text, logos, stickers, or high-contrast graphics, as PNG provides lossless fidelity. Use JPEG (at 90%+ quality) for complex photos and portraits to reduce file size while maintaining excellent visual clarity.
Once your photo fits the 9:16 ratio, keep building — add text and graphics, drop it into a frame, or combine several shots into a grid.
